The Pros and Cons of Different Types of Washbasins

Washbasins seem to be one of the most basic things at home, office, hotel or any establishment. While there are various different types of washbasins that have their own names, many people often refer to them by the common name which is washbasin. However, little do they know that different types of washbasins have their own name and their own set of advantages and disadvantages.

There are 7 different types of washbasins available in the market today. You can choose any one of them depending on the space available in your bathroom and who will be using it.

1. Counter-top Basin

As the name suggests, this sink is meant to be placed on top of the counter. Most of the washrooms in theatres and hotels have counter-top washbasins only. Basins under this type are also known as vessel sinks.

Pros: These basins are completely exposed over the counter unlike drop-in and other sinks. Hence, they are capable of creating a strong statement in your bathroom as well as grab attention. Moreover, these basins are quite deep and hence can hold plenty of water.

Cons: Since, the basin lies entirely above the counter, one needs to be very careful while finalising the counter height in order to ensure that basin is at the desired height and not above or below it.

2. Top-mount Basin

This sink is also meant to be placed on the top of the counter. However, only the rim of the sink lies above the counter while rest sits below it. The rim can be slim or a bit thicker as per your choice.

Pros: The basins under this category can go well with counter-top of almost any material including wood and laminate. This is simply because the entire cut out gets covered with the sink and hence chances of the counter being damaged by water becomes nil.

Cons: With a sink of this type, wiping off water from counter straight to the sink is not possible.

3. Under-mount Basin

The basins of this type sits entirely underneath the counter including the rim.

Pros: Water spill on the counter can be wiped directly into the washbasin.

Cons: These basins are often very costly and their mounting is only possible with solid surface such as stone.

4. Wall-mount Basin

Wall mounted sinks do not need any counter to rest upon. They can be fixed directly on the wall while giving a minimalist feeling to a room.

Pros: Since, this basin does not need any counter, it can save you quite a lot of floor space, thereby making your bathroom look bigger.

Cons: In the absence of counter, there will be no storage space unless you install some cabinets.

5. Washplane Sink

These slim, streamlined and stylish washbasins are often spotted in the bathrooms of hotels and restaurants.

Pros: These basins are very appropriate for powder rooms or bathrooms with limited space as they take up very little space.

Cons: The drawback of this basin type is that it is suitable for powder rooms only. It is very shallow and hence cannot hold water.

6 .Pedestal Basin

The wall mounted basins with their own pedestal are called the pedestal basins. They are also known as free-standing basins as they do not need to be mounted over a wall or counter.

Pros: Free-standing washbasins conceal any pipework and also look very aesthetically appealing.

Cons: These basins are often costly as compared to other washbasins. Also, cleaning around a pedestal basin can be quite tricky because of the gap between the pedestal and the wall.

7. Semi Recessed

If your bathroom has limited space but you still want to have some storage space then you can opt for semi recessed washbasin.

Pros: A basin of this type is placed on the front part of the counter, thereby allowing you to have much shallower cabinets. This will free up the floor space while providing you enough storage space to keep your cosmetics and other bathroom essentials.

Cons: Since there is no counter around the front part of the washbasin, the chances of water splashing on the floor is very high.

Every washbasin has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Depending on the space available in your room and your style, you can pick a basin after assessing its pros and cons.
